Song lyrics o' the day - Elbow

A friend of mine grows his very own brambles
They twist all around him 'til he can't move
Beautiful, quivering, chivalrous shambles
What is my friend trying to prove?

I love the opening of this song. Heartwrenching.

Elbow is from Manchester.

I went to Manchester once. My father had meetings at the Shell office there and I thought I'd go along to...shop...or hit the pub. We got there and some kid spat on my father as he was walking past. I can't remember exactly, but I think my father either then told him off, or cuffed him upside the head. Next thing you know, there's this total chav mother (bad bleached hair, gross fake nails, about 6 children, looked maybe 23...) yelling at my father. He's rolling his eyes...a policeman comes up...she hears my father isn't British and starts going on about how she's going to sue his american ass. It was quite the show. He didn't seem at all bothered by it, but I was ready to take that bitch down, yo! Fortunately, the policeman looked at her, looked at my father and just told us to walk away.

We asked the receptionist where I should hang while my father was in his meeting and the receptionist actually refused to let me out of the building! The office tower had a huge concrete wall around it with barbed wire at the top.  I sat in the lobby for four hours. Good times.

To top it all off, driving home, we saw a motorcycle accident and I felt too guilty not to stop. It was pretty gross.

I've never had any desire to go back to Manchester.

A Letter on College Life

Dear Team,

I wish you could only go to college once you'd put in several years at a really, really crummy job. I guest lectured today at the local college and I saw myself (ten years ago) reflected in the students' faces. When I was in school, I a) thought I knew everything b) couldn't imagine how soaking up as much knowledge as I possibly could would help my future c) really didn't care as I was focused on what I was going to wear out that weekend.

I get it now. I'd like a do-over. I'll be that crazy, mature-student that sits in the front of the class and asks questions after every lecture. I see the value in it.

Youth is wasted on the young.

*sigh*
