I feel a little weird posting top 5 lists around the end of the year. Everyone is coming out with all kinds of crazy lists and I’d hate for any words of wisdom I write to get lost in the shuffle. Since you’ve probably had your fill of top albums/songs of 2010, I thought I’d pass along my top 5 covers of the year. There’s something about a good cover that can make it seem like an entirely different song. I love that!

5. Blackbird Blackbird – Float On. Their latest album is purely forgettable, but this track is a gem.

4. White Hinterland – Don’t Take it Personal. Is White Hinterland huge yet? If not, I’m confused. Who knew you could take an early 90s semi-lame pop track and make it into something so beautiful? This is incredibly dorky, but I think it sounds like an angel is singing.

3. Ingrid Michaelson – Creep. Ingrid Michaelson is beautiful…and a girl. The juxtaposition of these two things and the lyrics of this song are so interesting to me, I cannot listen to it enough.

2. Crystal Castles featuring Robert Smith – Not in Love. It amazes me that Dr Cuddles “never really got into The Cure” I hear Robert Smith’s voice and I can feel teenage-angst in my bones. In my bones, I tell you! Oddly enough, he doesn’t like Wilco either. Regardless, I am so happy this track fell into my lap earlier this year because I love it.

1. The Bird and the Bee – Sara Smile. Ok, I had to pick this track, because my name is in it, but the whole album is one of the best of the year. I know I talk about it all of the time, but I cannot recommend it enough!

Got any other good covers from this year? Can you name all the original artists from these tracks?

*note: this was live for several days before anyone let me know I had “2011” instead of “2010”
